The Climax Coach driver told investigators he had no choice but to take the head-on collision with Cyrus Jirongo's Mercedes after the politician pulled out from a gas station on the Nakuru-Naivasha Highway without yielding. Kamau Githinji was hauling 65 passengers from Nairobi toward Busia when the former Lugari MP cut across traffic and aimed straight for his lane.
Githinji thought about swerving but realized the bus would flip and kill everyone aboard, which forced him to hold his line and brace for impact. He found out later from cops that the solo driver he hit was the well-known political figure who died from severe head trauma at the scene.
The veteran driver with eight years at the company sent condolences to the family while explaining that traffic on the opposite side had jammed up and pushed Jirongo into the oncoming lanes.
