Collapsed toilet takes two kids in Norton

A Blair toilet collapse killed two children aged 7 and 4 last Friday. The kids had gone to help a 3-year-old use the bathroom when disaster struck. This terrible accident happened at a house in the Marshlands area of Norton. Inspector Ian Kohwera from Zimbabwe police confirmed details about the tragedy at address 8562.

The entire structure caved in without warning, trapping all three children inside. Their cries for help brought adults running to dig them out fast. Everyone rushed the kids to a nearby medical clinic for treatment. Doctors tried their best but couldn't save two of them, who passed away right after arriving.

Police urged families to build these structures only on solid ground. Kohwera emphasized following proper building methods as essential to prevent future deaths. Blair toilets first appeared in the 1970s, thanks to Dr. Peter Morgan's work. He developed them at Harare's Blair Research Institute, later renamed the National Institute of Health Research.

These special latrines solve problems that plague standard pit toilets throughout rural areas. They control odors much better and keep flies away from waste. The design specifically addresses sanitation needs for people living in countryside communities across Zimbabwe.
