Consensus Commission Questions July Charter Signing Feasibility as Reforms Stall

A top official expressed concern about meeting a key deadline for Bangladesh's reform charter. Professor Ali Riaz leads the National Consensus Commission and spoke at a meeting with political parties. The commission hopes to sign the July Charter on July 16 to honor Abu Sayed's death. Riaz said officials worry they cannot meet this target date. The signing process must finish during July despite these concerns.

The commission meets with political parties at the Foreign Service Academy to discuss state reforms. Riaz said the country needs major changes to prevent dictators from returning to power. Sheikh Hasina was removed from office last August after mass protests. The professor asked political leaders how much progress Bangladesh has made since her removal. He wants parties to focus on national needs rather than their personal goals.

Reform talks have shown some progress but not enough for state changes. The commission tries to be flexible when hearing different party opinions. Political parties represent the people and will govern the country later. Riaz said future leaders must prevent constitutional changes that go against public wishes. The country needs to limit individual power and strengthen courts and legal systems.

Representatives from 30 political parties attended the seven-day meeting series. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami joined other groups for discussions. Commission members want to reach agreements on various reform topics. The professor said people made great sacrifices during the July uprising and officials must honor their efforts.
