Corruption Claims Rock Uganda Wildlife Authority

There are worries about how Uganda's wildlife agency is picking a new leader. Some people think the process is not fair or honest.

The current boss, Sam Mwandha, will leave his job soon. The wildlife agency put an ad in the newspapers to find someone new. But there might be some problems with how they are doing it.

Usually, the person picked to lead the agency needs to have certain degrees, like in science or the environment. But this time, the agency changed what they wanted. Some people think they did this to help one person get the job.

Out of 27 applicants, the agency only interviewed two. Those two might not have the right skills to do the job well. The wildlife agency has many challenges, like animals and people fighting over land.

Some people think the agency is playing favorites. They say the process is not fair. They want it to start over so more people have a chance. They worry that if the wrong person gets the job, it could hurt efforts to protect animals and nature.

The wildlife agency is very important in Uganda. It takes care of national parks and animals. Many people visit Uganda to see the animals, so tourism is a big business. If things go wrong at the top, it could be bad for the country.

Not long ago, the agency had some problems with people selling permits to see gorillas in the wrong way. The country lost a lot of money because of it.

People want the process of picking a new leader to be fair and honest. They say the agency needs someone with the right skills and ideas to do a good job. If not, Uganda's animals and parks could be in trouble.
