Cricket Cranes gamble on rookie Calvin Watuwa for Pearl of Africa Series

Calvin Watuwa will represent Uganda's senior cricket team for the first time during the Pearl of Africa Series. The former Jinja SS student has progressed through domestic leagues and played for Bulawayo Athletic Club in Zimbabwe's national competition during 2023. His selection reflects steady development across multiple clubs such as Charity, Tornado, Challengers, and Jinja SS. Watuwa previously toured India with development squads and helped Uganda Emerging capture the RCA Invitational championship in Kigali. The right-handed all-rounder brings versatility to the Cricket Cranes roster.

Mathew Musinguzi earns his debut alongside Watuwa as Uganda prepares to face Nigeria, UAE, Kenya, and Namibia A. The Aboojo player participated in Uganda's 2022 Under-19 World Cup campaign before advancing through domestic cricket ranks. Juma Miyagi assumes captaincy duties while Riazat Ali Shah recovers from injury. The pace bowler debuted in 2023 and briefly led the team during previous tournaments in Kigali. Uganda won the tournament's inaugural edition in 2021 by defeating Kenya in the final match.

The series provides preparation opportunities before September's T20 World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe. Veteran spinners Frank Nsubuga and Alpesh Ramjani anchor the bowling attack while Cyrus Kakuru handles wicketkeeping responsibilities. Ronald Lutaya returns after debuting on last year's Namibia tour.
