Danny Boyle brings back his zombie movie series with 28 Years Later hitting theaters this weekend. The director made the first film 28 Days Later back in 2002 and used scary music from Godspeed You Black Emperor. John Murphy created the music for both earlier movies but Boyle picked a different group for the new one.
Young Fathers from Scotland will handle the soundtrack duties this time around. The rap group released their album Heavy Heavy in 2023 and worked on a charity record for Gaza relief. They make spooky atmospheric sounds but never scored a movie before this project.
Boyle used Young Fathers songs in his 2017 film T2 Trainspotting which shows he likes their style. The new soundtrack has actual songs with singing instead of just background music. People can stream the 28 Years Later Score right away through Milan and Sony record labels.
The choice to hire Young Fathers seems unusual but makes sense given their dark sound. Few directors use music as well as Boyle does in his films. The Scottish trio creates eerie music that should work perfectly with zombie horror scenes.
