David Maraga begs Kenyans for Sh10 to fuel 2027 power grab

Former Chief Justice David Maraga announced his intention to seek the presidency in 2027 through a grassroots funding approach during a Citizen TV interview on July 15. The retired judicial leader plans to solicit small contributions from ordinary Kenyans, anticipating donations as modest as 10 shillings from supporters. Maraga stated he would contribute only 1 to 2 million shillings of his personal funds to the campaign effort. He expressed confidence that Kenyans would provide 50 to 100 shillings individually, with any surplus funds directed toward public causes. The former chief justice emphasized his limited financial resources while outlining this citizen-funded strategy.

The presidential aspirant pledged to establish a government staffed by qualified professionals and technical experts rather than political appointees. Maraga committed to ensuring all public servants demonstrate competence and fulfill their responsibilities effectively under his potential administration. He stressed that law enforcement would apply equally to all citizens, beginning with the president himself. The former chief justice criticized the current government's response to recent youth-led demonstrations, advocating for a more citizen-centered approach. He condemned the labeling of young protesters as terrorists and called for the protection of constitutional rights.

Maraga endorsed the concept of national dialogue while emphasizing the need for genuine public participation rather than elite negotiations. He argued that previous dialogue efforts failed because they focused on political positions instead of addressing fundamental systemic issues. The former chief justice supported the youth protesters' constitutional rights to peaceful demonstration and assembly. He called for a return to the rule of law principles and criticized the use of excessive force against demonstrators.
