Debapriya trashes Dhaka’s new rights commission draft

Bangladesh citizens deserve a strong human rights commission with real power, according to Centre for Policy Dialogue fellow Debapriya Bhattacharya. He spoke Saturday at a Citizens Platform meeting about the proposed Human Rights Commission Act 2025. The previous commission established under the Awami League government proved useless despite good intentions, Bhattacharya stated.

Supreme Court lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua identified multiple problems with the current draft legislation. The proposal lacks clear timelines for handling complaints and funding sources remain undefined. Government bureaucrats may still serve on the commission despite obvious conflicts of interest.

Sanjida Islam from Mayer Daak described the old commission as ineffective. The organization received only form letters sent to ministries rather than meaningful action on enforced disappearance cases.
