Deco Says Barca Blew It on Vitor Roque

Barcelona made another poor signing decision with teenager Vitor Roque. The young Brazilian striker joined from Athletico Paranaense with great expectations. He struggled for playing time during his first season and left after just 12 months. Barcelona loaned him to Real Betis before Palmeiras bought him permanently. The club admits they handled his arrival badly.

Sporting director Deco says bringing Roque six months early was wrong. Coach Xavi wanted the player to arrive during the January transfer window instead of summer 2024. Deco believes this timing hurt the young striker's development. Barcelona has very high standards that can overwhelm new players. The club failed to help Roque adapt to European football properly.

Deco reveals Xavi made the final call on the early signing. Coaches always have input on transfer decisions at Barcelona. The idea was to give Roque extra time to adjust to the team. Moving to Europe proves difficult for young South American players. Top clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid create even more pressure for newcomers.
