Dhaka court grants two-day remand for Anisul Huq in Arms Act case

A judge sent former Law Minister Anisul Huq to jail for two more days on Monday. The court decision came after police asked to keep him locked up for five days. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhajur Rahman made the ruling at the courthouse. Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain from Banani Police Station confirmed the news. The case involves illegal gun possession charges against the former minister.

Huq had a legal pistol license from Banani Police Station before his troubles started. The Home Ministry canceled all personal security gun permits from January 2009 through August 2024. Gun holders had to turn over their weapons before September 3, 2024. The government wanted all licensed firearms returned to police stations across the country. Many people followed the new rules and gave up their guns.

Huq never brought his pistol to the police station as required. He also failed to contact authorities about his weapon between September 2024 and May 2025. Police went to his home address but found nobody there. Officers could not locate him or his missing firearm. The former minister seemed to disappear from his registered location.

Police caught Huq on August 13 near Sadarghat launch terminal. He was trying to escape from Dhaka using the river route. Officers arrested him based on information from local sources. The former law minister has been behind bars ever since his capture. He faces several serious murder charges along with the gun case.
