A court in Dhaka on Monday ordered former lawmaker and Awami League Organising Secretary BM Mozammel Haque to jail in connection with a murder case related to the July uprising. Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana made the decision after police presented Haque and requested his detention.
The court approved a request from the defense to grant division status for the Awami League leader in jail. Authorities arrested Mozammel on Oct. 5 in the Niketan area of the capital.
According to the case, Awami League activists opened fire on a procession at Ring Road in Adabor on Aug. 5 last year, killing 18-year-old apparel worker Rubel. Investigators found evidence that Mozammel led the crackdown at the protest site.
