Dhaka court delays Sagar Runi murder report for 121st time

A Dhaka magistrate postponed the submission deadline for the journalist murder investigation until November 30. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhajul Islam rescheduled the hearing after investigators failed to present their findings on the planned Sunday date. Police Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam Russell from Mirpur Model Police Station's general registration branch verified this development to BSS. The case has experienced 121 postponements since proceedings began. This represents another setback in the prolonged legal process.

Attackers killed journalists Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi on February 11, 2012, at their West Rajabazar apartment while their four-year-old son Mahir witnessed the crime. Runi's brother, Nawser Alam, initiated legal proceedings by filing charges with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The Detective Branch initially handled the investigation before authorities transferred responsibility to the Rapid Action Battalion. RAB requested 111 extensions over twelve years without producing results. The High Court mandated a specialized task force formation through the Home Affairs Ministry on September 30, 2024, replacing RAB's authority. Officials established a four-member investigative team on October 23, 2024, with a six-month completion mandate.
