Nigerian security forces have locked up activist Kola Edokpayi in Benin City. He leads the Talakawa Parliament group. Officials took him on Saturday because he planned a rally supporting Burkina Faso leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
Take It Back movement leader Hafiz Lawal slammed the arrest as wrong both legally and morally. He said security agencies use government power against people who speak out. Lawal demands that they free Edokpayi right away. The arrest happened just because Edokpayi backed the Burkina Faso government, according to Lawal.
Edokpayi has worked to bring regular Nigerians together through his grassroots movement. The Nigerian Constitution protects freedom of thought, speech, and coming together with others. The DSS security service has not said anything about why they arrested him.
Captain Traoré took control of Burkina Faso in September 2022. Many across Africa have started to support his leadership style.
