Dzyuba Smashes Russian Scoring Record in Akron Win

Artem Dzyuba scored his 237th career goal from the penalty spot during Akron Tolyatti's match against Fakel Voronezh. The striker extended his all-time scoring record for Russian players in the 72nd minute of their World Russian Premier League contest. He first claimed the top spot on March 9 against Krylia Sovetov when he passed retired star Aleksandr Kerzhakov. Dzyuba later surpassed Kerzhakov's national team record with his 31st goal for Russia.

Dzyuba holds the Russian Premier League scoring record with 166 goals. He won four league championships playing for Zenit St. Petersburg, two Russian Cup titles, and four Super Cups. The veteran forward joined Akron last September after spells with Spartak Moscow, Lokomotiv Moscow, Tom Tomsk, Rostov, Arsenal Tula, and the Turkish side Adana Demirspor.

Akron beat Fakel 1-0 behind Dzyuba's goal, climbing to ninth place with 28 points. Fakel continues struggling without a win in 12 straight matches. The Voronezh team sits next-to-last with 15 points after failing to score for eight consecutive games. Akron will host Spartak Moscow on April 19 in their next match. Fakel faces Rostov at home the following day.
