Bangladesh will help citizens living in Japan register to vote and receive national identity cards. The Election Commission plans to send a technical team to the Bangladesh Embassy on July 7. The team will help Bangladeshis complete their voting paperwork and identity card applications. Senior Secretary Akhter Ahmed will travel to Japan to watch over the work. He will spend five days monitoring the registration process from July 13 through July 17.
Embassy officials received instructions on June 26 about staffing needs for the project. The commission asked for one officer and four data entry workers to assist with the registration drive. These staff members will help process applications and enter information into computer systems. The embassy must provide these workers to support the voting registration effort. The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, Italy, Kuwait, Qatar, Malaysia, Australia and Canada provide voter registration assistance. These programs help overseas Bangladeshis participate in elections back home. Embassy staff in these nations process applications and collect required documents. The Japan program follows the same model used in other countries.
Nearly 50,000 Bangladeshis worldwide have requested voter registration through these programs. Officials collected fingerprints and photos from almost 30,000 applicants across all participating countries. More than 20,000 people completed the full registration process and can vote in future elections. The commission continues processing thousands of remaining applications. These numbers show strong interest among overseas Bangladeshis in maintaining voting rights.
