Econet voice calls surge 44 percent, defying data-only trends

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe achieved a remarkable 44 percent rise in voice call usage during the quarter ending May 31, 2025. The telecommunications company simultaneously experienced doubled data traffic volumes across its network. This growth challenges industry assumptions about declining traditional voice services. The results demonstrate sustained customer demand for basic connectivity alongside advanced digital offerings. Voice telephone services maintain strong relevance within Zimbabwe's evolving telecommunications market.

The company restructured its smartphone financing program by removing deposit requirements and extending payment terms to 24 months. Previous arrangements required deposits and limited repayment periods to three months. Smartphone penetration reaches only 55 percent according to regulatory data from 2024. The initiative addresses affordability barriers that prevent digital access for many consumers. Extended payment options enable customers to enter the digital economy without substantial upfront investments.

Econet expanded its infrastructure by deploying lightweight base stations in rural areas and adding 100 new locations to its 5G network coverage.
