Elon Musk sets sights on dominating AI chip production

Tesla chief Elon Musk has disclosed that his electric vehicle company operates on a yearly development cycle for artificial intelligence processors, releasing updated platforms every 12 months. The executive stated on X that Tesla has spent several years designing such semiconductors and intends to manufacture them at volumes exceeding all rival technology firms.

Musk previously indicated ambitions to produce 200 billion AI chips annually, though analysts question whether such targets remain feasible given current manufacturing constraints. Tesla has partnered with TSMC and Samsung for its AI5 and upcoming AI6 processors while considering Intel Foundry as an additional supplier. The automaker plans what Musk calls a TeraFab facility to address production bottlenecks, though industry observers note that establishing semiconductor manufacturing capabilities presents significant challenges for companies without prior fabrication experience.
