Kenya has learned what caused the helicopter crash that killed their defense chief. President Ruto received a report saying engine problems brought down the aircraft last year. The military has updated its safety rules to stop future accidents.
The crash happened on April 18, 2024, when General Francis Ogolla traveled with nine other military staff members. Their Bell helicopter crashed after takeoff from Chesegon Trading Centre. Everyone died when the aircraft hit the ground. The team had been visiting soldiers fighting crime in North Rift.
The crash killed high-ranking officers, including Brigadier Saidi, Colonel Keittany, Lieutenant Colonel Sawe, Major Magondu, Captain Mohamed, Captain Litali, Sergeant Mureithi, Sergeant Omondi, and Sergeant Nyawira. President Ruto called General Ogolla a patriot who served Kenya with honor.
Ogolla became Chief of Defence Forces just one year before his death. He previously led the Kenya Air Force. Defense Secretary Soipan Tuya presented the findings at State House with new military leaders present. The Kenya Air Force promised to check all aircraft carefully going forward.
