Essau Magistrate Sentences Mechanic for Attacking Officer

A court in Essau gave Alpha Omar Jallow a fine of D20,000 on Wednesday. If he fails to pay, he must work hard in prison for four years. The mechanic hurt police officer Mbanyick Joof with an iron bar.

Jallow said he was wrong in the case of harm to the officer. The court first asked him to pay D10,000 or face two years of prison work. Head judge MF Fofana then said Jallow must give D10,000 more to the hurt officer. If he does not pay this sum, he will stay two more years in prison.

The court heard that Jallow hit Officer Joof's neck after the policeman stopped his car to ask him things. Before his fine, Jallow asked the court to be kind. "I feel bad about what I did," he said. "I want them to pardon me."

Judge Fofana noted that Jallow had never been in trouble before and that the young man acted well during his time in court. Yet the judge said many young people harm others in their areas. He pointed out that the iron bar could have killed the officer.

The judge chose mercy since Jallow felt bad about his actions. Instead of sending him straight to jail, he let him pay a fine. Chief Inspector Omar Manka brought the case to court.
