Fakhrul says February 2026 polls now certain

Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed confidence that February 2026 will mark the next national election date. Political parties gained certainty after Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus delivered remarks at the United Nations General Assembly. Fakhrul spoke with reporters at a New York hotel Friday following the UN session.

The BNP secretary general rejected calls for proportional representation in parliament's lower chamber. He praised Yunus for bringing opposition leaders to the international gathering. Fakhrul described this gesture as demonstrating national unity on the global stage.

The party official commended the interim government's efforts to stabilize Bangladesh's economy and political system. BNP leaders have pledged complete support for the current administration's reform agenda. Fakhrul noted his party previously advocated similar structural changes through earlier policy proposals.
