Family members blocked access to a student's burial site after visitors began taking soil for superstitious purposes. Nurly Sahirah Azman died when a university bus crashed on a Perak highway earlier this month. Her brothers put up barrier ropes around the grave Saturday evening at Kampung Gong Pasir Muslim Cemetery. The family wants people to stop using her name for personal gain or supernatural beliefs. They planted bushes and placed white stones over the burial plot.
The 23-year-old woman had memorized the entire Quran before her death. She was among 15 Sultan Idris Education University students who died when their bus left the East-West Highway near Gerik on June 9. Forty-eight people rode the vehicle when it crashed. Thirteen passengers died at the crash site and two more died later at hospitals. Emergency workers rushed the other victims to medical facilities for treatment.
Hundreds of people have visited the grave since the accident happened. Some visitors took dirt from the burial site and rubbed it on their children's faces. Others came seeking blessings or good fortune from the deceased student. Social media posts showed directions to reach the cemetery location. The local Islamic religious office warned it will punish anyone performing forbidden rituals at the grave.
