Farmers Scoop Big Bucks as Tobacco Sales Skyrocket

Zimbabwe needs 36 million more kilograms of tobacco to reach its 300 million kilogram target. Farmers have sold 264 million kilograms worth 888 million US dollars after 62 days of selling. Sales jumped 39 percent from last year when farmers sold 188.6 million kilograms worth 655.8 million dollars. Contract buyers purchased most tobacco at 250.3 million kilograms valued at 839.3 million dollars. Auction floors handled 13.6 million kilograms worth 49.3 million dollars.

Farmers started planting tobacco seedbeds for next season. Kutsaga Research sold over 345,000 grams of seeds that can cover more than 70,000 hectares. Seed sales dropped from last season when 455,690 grams covered 91,138 hectares. Late rains caused fewer farmers to buy seeds early this year. Research officials expect sales to increase as farmers prepare for July planting season.

More than 140,000 farmers grow tobacco compared to just a few farmers years ago. The crop expanded from traditional areas like Manicaland and Mashonaland to new regions like Matabeleland South. Better prices and organized marketing helped tobacco production grow across the country. Training programs teach farmers better growing and curing methods to improve quality. Government agencies work with farmers to follow proper regulations and sustainable practices.
