Tobacco Sales Explode As Farmers Chase 300Mkg Haul

Zimbabwe farmers sold 264 million kilograms of tobacco after 62 days of trading. The country moves closer to its historic goal of 300 million kilograms for the season. Sales jumped 40 percent from last year when farmers delivered 189 million kilograms during the same period. The Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board tracks all sales across the nation. Officials expect farmers to reach the target before the season ends.

Tobacco earned farmers 889 million dollars compared to 656 million dollars last year. The total value increased 36 percent despite lower prices per kilogram. Farmers received an average of 3.37 dollars per kilogram compared to 3.48 dollars previously. Quality improved as rejected bales fell from 2.78 percent to 2.09 percent. Higher production helped offset the small price decline for growers.
