Finally SRC Takes on Zimbabwe Netball Mess

The Sports and Recreation Commission met with Zimbabwe Netball Association officials yesterday after years of complaints. The closed meeting in Harare included club leaders, league administrators, Nedbank sponsors, former players, and current athletes. Many attendees expressed relief at finally having a chance to speak directly about problems. They raised concerns about injured national team players receiving no support despite Nedbank Zimbabwe covering most expenses.

Stakeholders questioned the legal standing of ZINA leadership, particularly President Leticia Chipandu, who has served for about twenty years. They shared a case where an international player bought her air ticket for the 2023 World Cup but never received repayment. The SRC confirmed it has investigated these issues for almost a year and promised results within two weeks once additional documents arrive.

SRC chairman Gerald Mlotshwa acknowledged previous netball problems dating back to 2019 when commissioners started their work. A formal petition sent to authorities last year accused ZINA of major rule violations and failing to care for athletes. The next steps remain unclear - whether ZINA leaders will face suspension, undergo financial review, or see temporary management installed.
