Five-Year-Old Drowns in Shamva Mine Pit

A tragic incident occurred on November 11 in Zvitokwe Village, Shamva, where a five-year-old boy named Matinyasha Kachavhe lost his life. The young boy drowned while swimming with his two friends, who were also five years old and from the same village, in a disused open-cast mine pit near the Musambanyama River. The pit was only about 50cm deep.

At the time of the incident, Matinyasha's mother, Dadirai Mapiki, and his grandmother, Irene Kwenda, were busy panning for gold nearby. When Matinyasha drowned, his friends ran away without telling the adults what had happened. The women thought the children had gone home because the area had become quiet.

An hour later, a man named Iron Kaunda told Matinyasha's mother that he had heard two boys talking about the drowning. The villagers then went to the pit to check and found the boy's body. The provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha, confirmed the boy's identity.
