Fortnite Storms App Store But Apple Stays Smiling

Fortnite has come back to the Apple App Store in the US after five years away. Players can now pay for items inside or outside the app. A Goldman Sachs analyst thinks this setup will hurt Apple less than expected. Epic Games shows both payment choices on the same screen. Users get no direct price cuts when they pay outside the app.

Apple removed Fortnite from its store in 2020 when the game added its payment system. A California judge ruled Apple broke a 2021 court order about letting apps link to other payment methods. Apple plans to fight back but will follow the rules for now. The Goldman Sachs report claims most app makers lack the money and staff to build good outside payment systems. Apple takes 30 percent of app sales, which falls to 15 percent after users subscribe for a year.
