Frelimo Declared Winner Amid Mozambique Chaos

Mozambique's highest court just said that Frelimo, the candidate from the ruling party, won the presidential election. This was even though there were many reports of funny business at the polls and protests where people died. Daniel Chapo is the guy's name, and he gets to be president now.

The opposition candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, isn't happy about it. He says Frelimo cheated to stay in power. Frelimo says they didn't do anything wrong, but some election watchers saw stuff that wasn't on the up-and-up.

Mozambique has it rough. It's a poor country, and a big storm just killed almost 100 people up north. There's also been fighting with a group that likes the Islamic State in that area. That's put some big money gas projects on hold, which is a bummer because folks could really use the jobs.

When they first counted the votes, they said Chapo got 71 percent, and Mondlane got 20 percent. The court changed that a bit to 65 percent for Chapo and 24 percent for Mondlane. They said they did a recount.

A lady from Frelimo said everyone should just get along now and respect the election. But right after the court announced the news, people in the capital city started burning tires and blocking roads.

Things have been tense for a while. Two of Mondlane's helpers got shot and killed back in October. That led to weeks of protests and fights with the cops. A group that watches elections says at least 110 people have died.

The current president, Felipe Nyusi, tried to talk things out with Mondlane, but it didn't really go anywhere. He says he'll still step down next month so Chapo can take over.

Mondlane isn't backing down, though. He posted something on Facebook that sounded like his last words. He feels bad for all the regular people who've been killed in the mess since the election. He says he just wants the truth, even if it's the last thing he ever says.
