Gambia Eyes €11M for Digital Broadcasting Platform

Finance Minister Seedy Keita announced yesterday that Digital Gambia Limited needs more than €11 million to create a digital broadcasting platform. The company began operating in 2021 as part of GRTS, the national broadcaster. Keita spoke to lawmakers who asked questions about GRTS's digital progress during a National Assembly Public Enterprises Committee meeting.

GRTS has started buying digital equipment to speed up its move toward modern broadcasting capabilities. All television studios at GRTS already produce high-definition video content. The radio service broadcasts through satellite technology. These improvements represent just part of the needed changes to complete the digital transition.

The country must switch completely from analog to digital broadcasting systems. This change requires building a digital terrestrial television platform called DTT. Digital Gambia Limited holds responsibility for creating this nationwide platform. The exact budget reaches €11,257,000 for full implementation of the DTT project across The Gambia.

The government faces challenges funding such an expensive project alone. Several government departments have joined forces to find solutions. The information ministry collaborates with Digital Gambia Limited leaders and board members. Finance and foreign affairs ministries help contact international partners for potential funding support. The finance ministry also launched efforts to implement the project through public-private partnerships.
