Gambia Reports Rapid Progress on Central River Region Roads

Transport Minister Ebrima Sillah visited road projects in Central River Region and liked what he saw. Workers have finished three kilometers of the 26-kilometer stretch between Karantaba and Futufula. The minister said communities could not reach these areas before the new roads. Local people and animals from Senegal can use clean water from new wells built during construction.

Cornerstone Construction runs the 50-kilometer project that connects several towns. The company belongs to a Gambian person who worked overseas before returning home. Officials praise the firm for meeting deadlines and building quality roads. Three separate road sections make up the entire project.

Government plans call for 250 more kilometers of road construction across the country. Sillah wants local companies to work together and share resources for bigger projects. Some Gambian contractors perform well but others struggle with technical challenges. The transport ministry will create a master plan for nationwide infrastructure improvements.

Project managers report 66 percent completion for the current work. Road surfaces need final sealing layers before crews finish the job. Engineers test materials regularly to ensure roads last 20 years. Proper drainage prevents flooding that damages pavement over time.
