Amie Njie went to court Tuesday for stealing expensive jewelry worth two million dalasis. Inspector Cherno B. Jallow brought charges against her on behalf of police bosses. The case happened at Kanifing Magistrates' Court with Magistrate Mben Faal hearing the matter. Njie faces theft charges under Gambian criminal law from 2009. She told the court she did not commit the crime.
Police say Njie took gold jewelry from Abdou Karim Senghor on May 21st at Fajara. The stolen items were three gold sets, one ruby ring, one gold bangle, one gold necklace, and two more bangles with one ring. All the jewelry belonged to Senghor and cost two million dalasis total. The theft happened somewhere around Kanifing Municipality according to court papers.
Prosecutor Jallow asked for more time to bring his witnesses to court. He said he would not fight against letting Njie go free on bail before trial. The prosecutor noted that two million dalasis represents a large sum of money for stolen goods. Magistrate Thomas Touray agreed to let Njie post bail for the same amount as the stolen jewelry.
The court required five Gambian citizens to promise they would make sure Njie comes back for trial. Each person backing her must give their national ID card to court officials and sign legal papers about their finances. Njie must also give her passport and travel papers to the court registrar. The case continues June 10th at 1 p.m.
