Gambian youth defy funding to hold historic youth parliament vote

The National Youth Parliament completed its election process Wednesday after confronting significant financial obstacles throughout the week-long democratic exercise. Youth representatives from constituencies across The Gambia participated in the three-day voting period that concluded with results announced at the organization's Westfield Highway headquarters. Abdoulie O. Bah, the group's administrative head, characterized the process as unprecedented while acknowledging resource constraints that tested organizational capabilities.

Electoral Committee Chairperson Babucarr Nyang emphasized the historic nature of youth-led democratic participation. The entirely youth-managed process drew candidates and staff from all regions despite persistent funding limitations that continue affecting operations. Officials revealed they utilized personal vehicles and resources to deploy representatives nationwide due to inadequate financial support.

The civil society organization depends heavily on donor assistance but faces ongoing challenges accessing timely funding. Leaders expressed concern about sustainability while celebrating the successful electoral outcome that demonstrated young Gambians' leadership potential and commitment to national development initiatives.
