GDC Sacco secures Sh500m World Bank funding

A rural financial cooperative in Githunguri has obtained 500 million shillings from the World Bank's Safer Fund with help from AVL Consulting Group. GDC Sacco Limited will distribute these resources to smallholder farmers and micro-entrepreneurs across Kiambu County through mobile-based lending. The agreement marks a recovery pathway for agricultural communities affected by pandemic disruptions.

Dairy producers will access affordable credit to purchase equipment, upgrade facilities, and expand operations. CEO Charles Kioko described the achievement as transformative for financial access in farming communities. AVLC guided the cooperative through international funding requirements that many local institutions struggle to meet.

The platform will offer digital loans from 100,000 shillings with repayment terms between one and six months. GDC started operations in 2003 with 428 members and has grown to serve more than 38,000 people. AVLC plans additional partnerships to expand funding opportunities for African cooperatives.
