Ghana steel bender jailed for 6 months for machete attack over girlfriend

A court sentenced steel worker Kojo Senagbe to six months behind bars after he attacked a coworker with a machete. The 52-year-old man believed his victim tried to steal his girlfriend from him. Senagbe first said he was innocent but later admitted his guilt during the trial. Judge Kwabena Kodua Obiri Yeboah ordered him to pay a fine of GHS7,200 or serve another six months. The court also made Senagbe give his victim GHS5,000 as payment for damages.

Both men worked construction jobs and lived near each other in Community 14 Annex at Lashibi. Oliver Zinto was walking home from work on April 10 when Senagbe stopped him on a path around 10:30 at night. Zinto kept walking when Senagbe told him to stop. Senagbe cut Zinto with the large knife on his head, ear, arm and back. Zinto fought back and took the weapon away from his attacker.

People nearby helped treat Zinto's wounds and called police officers from Klagon station. Officers gave Zinto paperwork to get medical care at a hospital. Police arrested Senagbe two days later on April 12 at his home. Senagbe told officers he attacked Zinto because the man had stolen his romantic partner. Police found and kept the machete as evidence for the court case.
