India's cricket board announced on Saturday that Shubman Gill will replace Rohit Sharma as the captain of the one-day international team, effective with the series against Australia. The 26-year-old already serves as Test captain and vice-captain of the Twenty20 squad. Rohit and Virat Kohli, both veterans who have retired from T20 internationals and Tests, were named to the 15-player roster for the three-match series starting on Oct. 19.
Gill assumed the Test captaincy from Rohit before the England series and scored 754 runs across five matches to help India secure a 2-2 draw. Shreyas Iyer will serve as vice-captain for the Australia tour. India holds the top positions in both the ODI and T20 rankings of the International Cricket Council.
