Global Fund Calls on Ruto for Worldwide Health Fundraising

The Global Fund has contacted Kenya's President William Ruto to request his assistance with international fundraising efforts aimed at combating three major diseases globally. Executive Director Peter Sands sent correspondence to Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi asking for President Ruto's influential connections to help secure financial support during their Eighth Replenishment campaign. This appeal comes at a critical period when external health funding faces significant challenges worldwide.

Sands expressed confidence that the Eighth Replenishment would succeed with President Ruto's leadership and dedication. He emphasized how continued funding would allow the Global Fund to maintain support for Kenya and neighboring nations, helping them save lives, defeat HIV, TB, and malaria, and advance universal health coverage goals. The organization operates through collaborative partnerships between governments, civil society organizations, private enterprises, and communities affected by these diseases.

The Executive Director highlighted the urgent necessity of collaborative efforts to reduce disease burdens across Africa despite current global difficulties. He mentioned the strong twenty-year partnership between Kenya and the Global Fund, which has resulted in investments exceeding 300 billion Kenyan shillings (approximately $2.3 billion) within the country. These investments have contributed to substantial progress against the three diseases and moved Kenya closer to achieving universal health coverage for its citizens.

Sands praised Kenya's previous contributions, particularly its role as co-host of the Preparatory Meeting for the Seventh Replenishment in 2022. This event mobilized an unprecedented $15.7 billion internationally, with Kenya pledging $10 million - a significant demonstration of commitment to global health initiatives. During recent African Union discussions in Ethiopia, President Ruto advocated for African nations to develop self-sufficient health systems with reduced dependence on external funding sources.

The Global Fund acknowledged President Ruto's position on self-reliance but cautioned against overly rapid transitions that might endanger progress. Sands noted that countries across Africa have varying capacities to assume complete financial responsibility for their health systems. He described the Fund as a trusted partner supporting Kenya and other nations in their efforts to reduce disease burdens and develop nationally managed health infrastructures.

For successful fundraising outcomes, Sands emphasized the importance of President Ruto's advocacy, noting that head-of-state communications carry exceptional influence, particularly within the current complex geopolitical environment. The organization believes direct engagement from influential leaders like President Ruto will be essential to secure necessary funding for continued health initiatives throughout Africa.
