Global Leaders Pay Tribute to Jimmy Carter's Legacy

America Plans Final Farewell to Jimmy Carter.

The nation will honor Jimmy Carter at his state funeral on January 9. The event will take place at Washington National Cathedral on a day set aside to remember America's oldest president.

Ted Mondale steps in to read words his father wrote for Carter. The elder Mondale served as Carter's vice president but died three years ago. The son carries out his father's wish to say goodbye to his friend.

Carter died at home in Plains, Georgia on Sunday. He lived 100 years. More events will happen in Atlanta before he rests next to his wife, Rosalynn, in Plains. She passed away last November at 96.

President Biden asked for flags to fly halfway down their poles for 30 days. He called Carter "a humble servant of God and the people." The public can visit the Capitol to pay respects when Carter lies in state.

Leaders from both sides praised Carter. Donald Trump praised him as "a truly good man." Barack Obama said Carter showed others how to live with grace. Bill Clinton and George Bush also added their kind words.

Carter led the country from 1977 to 1981. The former peanut farmer from Georgia won peace between Egypt and Israel. But hard times at home cut his time short. Ronald Reagan beat him in the next vote.

His best work came after the White House. In 2002, Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize. He fought disease through his Carter Center and built houses with Habitat for Humanity into his 90s.

"We feel great sadness," said Jonathan Reckford from Habitat for Humanity. The group remembers Carter's hands-on help with thanks.
