Govt celebrates Zhombe road after 16 fatal accidents

Government officials completed the ZWG$14 million rehabilitation of the Kwekwe-Zhombe Road on Friday, delivering relief to motorists who previously endured hazardous travel conditions. The 40-kilometer project connects Kwekwe district with Gokwe North and South districts as part of Zimbabwe's infrastructure development campaign. Minister Owen Ncube commissioned the roadway at Zororo Shopping Centre in Zhombe, highlighting the achievement as evidence of President Mnangagwa's leadership priorities. The rehabilitation forms part of broader infrastructure initiatives aimed at achieving upper-middle income status by 2030. Officials accelerated the project ahead of Independence Day commemorations hosted in Gokwe North District.

Construction teams completed the eight-week project within the contracted timeframe after beginning work in March. Four local contractors divided the roadway into 10-kilometer sections, applying 20-millimeter asphalt overlays while constructing bus stops and installing proper signage. Zada Construction, Douflex Investment, Derivative Resources and Road Trackers executed the Treasury-funded project according to Southern African Transport and Communications Commission Standards. The rehabilitation represents part of the Second Republic's Heritage-Based Modernisation and Industrialisation program. Local solutions address regional challenges through this comprehensive infrastructure approach.

Chief Gwesela expressed appreciation for the completed project, noting that deteriorated road conditions previously caused 16 fatal accidents. The traditional leader credited presidential leadership for addressing community safety concerns through infrastructure investment. Resident Rosemary Sibanda praised the smooth roadway for eliminating vehicle breakdowns and creating new business opportunities. The upgraded route promises enhanced connectivity between districts while stimulating economic development. Community members anticipate improved quality of life through better transportation access.
