Groves gets two life terms, smirks through sentencing

Derrick Groves got hit with double life sentences after getting caught hiding under a house in Atlanta following his jailbreak from New Orleans. The 28-year-old was convicted of murdering two people at a Mardi Gras party back when he was younger, and he copped to manslaughter charges for two more killings on top of that. He busted out with nine other inmates by crawling through a hole behind a toilet, and they left graffiti saying it was easy.

The judge went off about how Groves showed zero remorse and kept smirking at the victims' families during the hearing. One sister talked about finding her brother dying in a car after Groves shot him with an AK-style rifle, and she said her life has felt broken ever since. The judge mentioned how Groves' grandmother was killed by cops after reporting corruption, and he said the guy betrayed her memory by becoming a killer himself.

Groves is appealing everything and says he's innocent, but the judge tacked on extra decades for attempted murder charges and made it clear he should stay locked up forever.
