A crash killed two people Monday night when their car hit a tree during a police chase in Mkoba, Gweru. The driver was a 33-year-old miner, Taurai Mhlanga. His female passenger remains unknown.
People at a nearby funeral saw the chase happen around 10:30 PM on Bristol Road. They reported that Constable Levison Sakala from ZRP Mkoba chased the Toyota Aqua but left after the crash without helping. Witnesses called emergency services, but both victims died at the scene.
Golden Mhlanga said his brother was returning from work in Shurugwi when the crash happened. The family wants answers about why police chased him. Taurai left behind four children and supported many relatives as their main provider.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed they are looking into the accident. He said videos of the incident are spreading online. The police promised both criminal charges and work discipline against Constable Sakala for his actions. Nyathi also offered sympathy to the families who lost loved ones.
