Harare Bleeds 250M as Execs Dodge ERP

The mayor of Harare told everyone that his city lost a lot of money—more than 250 million dollars over six years—because it didn't have a special computer system to keep track of everything.

The mayor, Jacob Mafume, thinks some city employees made it hard to set up this computer system because they wanted to steal money. He shared this information when he was talking to a group of people led by a former judge named Maphios Cheda.

The computer system they need helps cities manage their money, buy things, and ensure everyone follows the rules. Without it, the city might have lost even more money than anyone thought before. The mayor said he tried very hard to make the city install this system, but other people kept stopping it.

Many people who help run the city don't understand how this special computer system works. Some city workers tell them they don't need it, but that isn't true. The mayor is upset because the people in charge of buying things for the city keep finding reasons not to get the system.

Because Harare doesn't have this computer system, many people have problems with their bills. Sometimes, they receive two bills instead of one, and sometimes, their payment records disappear. The city used to have a good system, but it stopped using it in March 2019.

Some people said mean things about the mayor on social media. They said he took money to give the computer system job to a specific company. The judge in charge of looking into all these problems said this wasn't true. He told everyone they should be careful about spreading false stories because they could get into trouble if they did.
