Harare buzzes as 12 nations kick off COSAFA U17 football showdown

Government officials earned recognition for restoring Zimbabwe's ability to conduct major international competitions through enhanced sports tourism initiatives. The COSAFA Under-17 Boys Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers began on September 11 with formal ceremonies following four days of matches. Dr Eugenia Chidhakwa represented the Sports Minister during launch events, emphasizing youth development and regional cooperation through athletic programs. Officials encouraged participants to unite Southern Africa while demonstrating Zimbabwe's readiness to host elite tournaments. The competition reinforces the nation's position as a regional sports destination aligned with current development policies.

Twelve countries participate in matches running through September 20 across Norton and Harare venues. Hotels reached capacity throughout the competition period as visitors filled accommodation facilities. ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi praised Harare's sporting culture and heritage during official statements. Mayor Jacob Mafume highlighted the city's history of producing world-class athletes and hosting prestigious international events. The tournament serves as a pathway for developing talent that advances to European professional leagues.
