Construction on a new commuter railway connecting Harare and Chitungwiza is scheduled to begin shortly following the project's official launch. The three billion dollar initiative is a collaboration between the National Railways of Zimbabwe and the Beitbridge-Bulawayo Railway Company. Necessary equipment has already been manufactured and assembled in Bulawayo.
The Minister of Transport and Energy, Enos Chikowore, stated that the railway would eliminate the current passenger inconveniences of long queues and congestion. He explained that trains operating on a fixed schedule would allow commuters to plan their journeys effectively. The project is also expected to create hundreds of new jobs.
The National Railways of Zimbabwe will provide technical expertise, labor, and rolling stock for the project. The municipalities of Harare and Chitungwiza will contribute the required land and ensure their future development plans do not compromise the railway's long-term viability.
