Harare Headmaster Rips Off Mealie Meal And Kids Fees

A Harare primary school head faces serious corruption claims after a ministry audit found multiple wrongdoings. The report says Levyson Phiri at Kudakwashe Primary School broke tender rules and sold food meant for poor students. He also made parents buy expensive uniforms directly from the school. The investigation started when school officials noticed money problems between January 2022 and November 2023. Parents paid more than needed for uniforms before they could pay school fees.

The head worked with a groundsman to steal government mealie-meal bags for black market sales. Security caught one worker carrying a 44kg bag, who said the head told him to take it. Mr Phiri also took more fuel than allowed, despite clear rules limiting him to 160 liters monthly. He ran fundraisers without telling the school committee and claimed the money went for supplies like brooms. The head called the treasurer's role just ceremonial when asked for records.

The report mentions he abandoned a chicken project without explaining where the money went. The school bought 400 chicks but kept no records about sales or deaths. Mr Phiri also hired a tractor without permission and paid to fix a printer without getting price quotes first. When reporters asked about these claims, he said he knew nothing about any audit report.
