Harmony Pro MIDI needs a clean DAW handoff

Harmony Pro accepts MIDI keyboard input and lets you drag musical ideas directly into a DAW as part of its compose workflow. Harmony Pro’s drag-to-DAW workflow closes the gap between exploring a chord and arranging it on the timeline. The drop is a handoff, however, not the end of the musical decision.

Keyboard input and a dragged clip solve different problems. Input lets you play and audition ideas, while a MIDI region gives the DAW note events that can be placed, repeated, and edited.

MIDI input and dragged clips serve different jobs​

Treat keyboard input as the fast route into exploration, keeping your hands involved and comparison immediate. Hearing a useful chord does not yet place that event in the song with a defined position and duration.

Dragging MIDI chords into a DAW creates control because a MIDI clip can expose pitch, position, length, and velocity to the host’s editor. Those values are instructions for an instrument, not recorded sound.

Drop the idea onto a MIDI track with the intended instrument, since correct notes can remain silent without a valid destination. Routing varies by host, so verify playback before making detailed edits.

Place the first chord against a known bar or beat. A tiny offset at the start may be harmless for a loose performance but damaging when the clip must loop tightly. Zoom in before quantizing, since automatic correction can hide where the original handoff landed.

Keep one untouched copy of the dragged region to preserve the initial chords and voicings while you adjust the arrangement. It also makes a clean comparison possible when an edit quietly changes the harmony.

Clip boundaries and note data need inspection​

Start with the clip edges. Confirm that the region begins where the phrase should start and ends on the intended musical division. An extra fraction at either edge can create a late loop restart or leave an empty gap before repetition.

Inspect note endings because MIDI treats the start and release of a note as separate events, making duration part of the performance. Long releases inside the instrument can extend the audible result beyond the visible note.

Overlapping notes of the same pitch deserve special attention. Different instruments may retrigger, sustain, or ignore repeated note events differently when their releases collide. Fixing overlapping MIDI notes is therefore about predictable playback, not cosmetic grid tidiness.

Check velocity after note length because it can control loudness, timbre, or another programmed response, depending on the instrument. Avoid random humanization until the basic accents support the groove.

Confirm every pitch against the voicing you approved in Harmony Pro. Octave placement can make the correct chord sound wrong when it lands below a bass part or crowds a lead. An editable chord progression inside your project should preserve harmonic intent while remaining free to fit the arrangement.

Inspect the final note of a loop because crossing the region boundary may cause truncation, sustain, or retriggering at the restart. A clean loop needs deliberate note-offs as well as correctly placed note-ons.

Quantize only the dimensions that need correction. Moving every note to the nearest grid line can erase a useful anticipation or spread, while leaving one accidental offset untouched can weaken the attack. Compare the corrected clip against the untouched copy at the same tempo.

The destination instrument changes the result​

A MIDI region contains instructions, so the same chord data can sound clipped through a pluck, blurred through a pad, or uneven through a piano. Judge the handoff with the intended patch loaded.

Polyphony settings can change the harmony more drastically. A monophonic instrument plays one pitch at a time, so a full chord region may collapse into a single line. Limited voice counts can also steal sustained notes when the next chord begins.

Envelope settings can make a slow attack feel late or a long release smear a clean chord change. Correct the instrument before shifting every MIDI event to compensate for a sound-design problem.

The arrangement may require separate ownership of the notes. Moving the lowest pitch to bass and keeping upper tones on keys can clarify the range without changing the chord. Check that the split does not duplicate bass notes already present.

Once playback matches the intended harmony, label and mute the untouched source clip rather than deleting it. Edit the working copy for register, timing, velocity, and note length, then test its first and last transitions in the full section. That preserves the original decision while the arrangement develops around it.
