The Hawks, a special police team in South Africa, took money from a Zimbabwean man named Gift Mafukidze. He didn't have papers to be in South Africa.
The Hawks leader in Gauteng, Lloyd Ramovha, said they arrested Mafukidze for breaking immigration laws. The police want to stop people from doing wrong things in their country.
Mafukidze got caught in July 2023. The police found him with R40,000. They kept him at a place called Lindela after moving him from Vredendal town.
A court in Pretoria said on December 10, 2024, that the government could keep his money. The police think he got the cash from mining gold without permission. Mafukidze told them the same thing. The police sent him back to Zimbabwe after that.
The Hawks boss in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, felt happy about the court's choice. He wants his team to keep South Africa's money safe from bad people. He said taking away crime money helps stop criminals from using it to do more bad things.
