Hawley targets Zuckerberg over Meta AI's grooming of children

Republican Senator Josh Hawley from Missouri sent a formal demand to Meta regarding the company's artificial intelligence safety protocols. Reuters revealed that Meta's internal documentation previously permitted romantic and sensual conversations between AI systems and minors. Meta acknowledged these guidelines existed and removed them following media inquiries. The company stated the documents did not reflect official policies. Hawley criticized Meta's approach as demonstrating careless attitudes toward youth protection.

The senator will lead a Senate Judiciary Committee investigation through the Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism. Meta must provide all versions of its artificial intelligence content risk standards to congressional investigators. The company faces requirements to submit documents detailing child safety measures and age verification processes. Correspondence with advertisers and federal regulators must also be disclosed. Hawley seeks to determine whether Meta misled authorities about protective safeguards for young users.
