Headman slain during land dispute, council condemns violence

A local councilor slammed the violent murder of a headman over a land dispute. Onayena councillor Mateus Kamati condemned the shooting that killed Onelago headman Sam Nepando and injured Iikokola headman I-Ben Nashandi, a National Planning Commission director, during a conflict resolution meeting near Iikokola village. Kamati expressed pain and disappointment over the new year tragedy, urging community members to reject violence and settle differences through peaceful dialogue instead.

Witnesses stated the two leaders were mediating a land dispute when a suspect produced a firearm and opened fire. Nepando died at the scene, while Nashandi required hospitalization. The attack left family members of the victims in a state of utter shock and disbelief.

Inspector General Joseph Shikongo emphasized the police investigation continues, warning that such violent acts will not be tolerated. He had previously cautioned against using firearms during dispute resolutions.

Community members remembered Nepando as a well-respected and approachable peacemaker, a firm leader who viewed his role as service, not authority. His long service involved land administration and conflict resolution, always championing communication over violence. This killing has sparked wider concerns about escalating tensions around land issues and eroding respect for traditional authority structures.
