Heineken will transfer its brewery in Bukavu, located in the conflict-ridden eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, to the Mauritian firm Synergy Ventures Holdings Ltd for a symbolic one euro. The Dutch brewer stated this decision was motivated by humanitarian concerns to protect local jobs and prevent the facility's misuse amid ongoing instability. The handover is scheduled for completion before the end of the year.
The brewery lost its operational control earlier this year following advances by M23 rebels, who captured Bukavu. Heineken noted that armed personnel had seized its facilities in the region in June. Under the new agreement, Synergy Ventures will assume all responsibilities for operations, employee safety, and tax payments.
Heineken has secured a three-year buyback option, which it could exercise if the security situation improves enough to allow for viable operations. The company's local subsidiary, Bralima, continues to function in other, more stable regions of the country.
