The High Court in Zimbabwe is ready to tackle many serious cases this year. The first term will be very busy, especially in the Bulawayo and Gweru areas.
There are 165 murder trials set to take place, which is a big number. Some of the cases are quite shocking.
For example, two police officers in Beitbridge are accused of killing a suspect. The officers allegedly cut up the body and hid it under a bridge. They did this after some money went missing from a store.
Another case involves a group of robbers who may have killed a businessman in Lobengula West. The man was attacked at his home in June 2022. The attackers took his phone and some cash.
Three soldiers are also going to trial. They are accused of shooting a church worshipper near the Limpopo River in 2019. It happened during an all-night prayer in the bushes.
A man from Gwanda will face trial, too. He is said to have killed his wife with a hoe in 2017. This happened after she reportedly refused to have sex with him.
The Midlands Province also has many murder cases—82 in total. The High Court is sending five judges to help with the trials. Two will go to Gokwe, and three to Gweru.
The Chief Justice, Luke Malaba, is worried about all the murders in the Midlands. He says the public might stop trusting the courts to keep them safe, so he ordered the extra judges to go there.
Last year, the High Court finished 137 cases in the Midlands. The Chief Justice thanked everyone who helped make that happen. He knows it takes a big team effort.
The 2025 court year will be very busy. But the judges are ready to work hard and bring justice to Zimbabwe.
