Hwange Power Glitch Drowns Harare in Darkness

Power cuts increase as Hwange station faces technical problems, and a fire damages equipment at a Harare substation. Zesa told people these issues force them to cut electricity more often across all areas. The company promises that its repair teams will work to fix the problem fast. They feel sorry for the trouble it causes everyone. Officials hope the station can run better once the Cabinet approves a repair deal with Jindal Africa.

The plan aims to raise power from 340 to 800 megawatts at the older Hwange units. Sunday night saw flames tear through the Highfield substation. This fire affects the power supply to South Harare neighborhoods. Many areas lost electricity, such as Southerton factories, homes, Workington factories, Ardbennie, Willowvale, Rugare, Westwood, Lochnivar, Highfield, parts of Waterfalls, parts of Mbare, Zesa Enterprises, and police stations. Power workers connected Workington to the Kambuzuma substation for temporary help. They also linked Willowvale to the Parkridge substation as a short-term fix.
